Hothouse Treetops
In the book Hothouse, the term “falling to the
green” means dying. Banyon trees are miles high, the ground consists of legions
of frightful carnivorous plants and the treetops are just as deadly. The
devolved humans live in relative safety in the middle layers of the trees but
still can quite literally “fall to the green” never to be seen again. The
wooden carved totems these humans wear on their belts are called “souls” and
are often the only representation of someone after death. They bring these
souls to the perilous treetops to load into a pod to be taken to “heaven”.
Strangely, the Earth and the moon are stagnant to each other and are connected
by spiderwebs. The hope is to kill a “Burn-Urn” plant, remove its clear pod and
fasten it to the hairy legs of mile long spiders, shown in the background, who
in turn, unwittingly carry the pod up to the moon. However, Burn-Urn plants are
fire breathers and have defense mechanisms of their own.
